The Story Behind the Pack

This play pack was created after years of running a home-based childcare from my own home, alongside my own children and the many other wonderful tamariki I cared for. I saw firsthand how much children thrive when they are given simple, unhurried time outdoors.

This resource is designed to help young children connect with nature. Through movement, playful rhymes—including a counting game inspired by the layers of a food forest—and observation, it turns any backyard or garden into a playful space for learning.

Ideas for Learning Stories

For early childhood educators, the final page of this pack includes quick ideas and prompts to help you see and capture the learning happening naturally during play:

  • Things You Might Notice: Watch for children copying movements in nature, counting plants, noticing insects and textures, or sharing their own garden choices.

  • Te Whāriki Links: The activities connect beautifully to the core strands of Exploration, Communication, Wellbeing, and Contribution.

  • Learning Story Prompts: Simple questions like "What did the child notice?" and "What might they explore next?" to help you write your reflections.
